The History of Barbour

It all began in 1894 when John Barbour opened the first J Barbour & Sons shop in South Shields Market, North East England: today, five generations later, the company remains family-run and has its head office in Simonside, South Shields, continuing to maintain its roots in its homeland.

Despite the wide range of products that Barbour offers from different parts of the world, the true heart of the brand remains its iconic waxed jacket, still handcrafted in the Simonside factory: this link with the past is just one of the reasons why the brand has managed to maintain its identity and quality intact over time.

Barbour is present in over 55 countries with stores spanning the UK, USA, Germany, Italy, Japan and more. Its collections are no longer limited to just men or country jackets: the brand offers clothing for women, children and even our four-legged friends, with a range that includes dresses, knitwear, footwear and accessories .

Barbour, a big family

Barbour's success lies in its ability to keep alive the traditional values of the family business, without ever losing sight of the style and functionality that characterize its garments. The brand embodies a timeless elegance where the charm and resistance of the British wardrobe blend with a touch of modernity and meticulous attention to detail.

Barbour's history is full of innovations and successes, such as the introduction of the motorcycle clothing range in the 1930s, chosen by numerous international teams until 1977, or the production of the famous " Ursula suit " during the Second World War, a garment adopted by the British Navy.

Over the years, Barbour has been able to renew itself while always keeping an eye on tradition. Its collaborations with prestigious brands such as Land Rover and Alexa Chung and sustainable initiatives such as the "Barbour Re-Loved" program demonstrate the commitment to the evolution of the brand without ever betraying its identity.

With over a century of experience behind it, Barbour remains an iconic and globally recognised brand, a symbol of quality and timeless style.
