Shoes and Women: an indissoluble love for a long time!

History of Footwear

The birth of footwear dates back to ancient times and even today it is not possible to establish precisely when it was invented.

Initially made from perishable materials such as animal skins and wood, its primary function was to protect the feet. No historical finds that document the first "models" have come down to us.

Footwear fashion developed in the 16th century with the circulation of graphics that recalled the style of known populations.

This phenomenon consolidated during the nineteenth century thanks to the findings of artefacts from the past and research in sciences such as anthropology, psychology and sociology that study fashion.

In the twentieth century, footwear acquired a very relevant influence and position in fashion.

Evolution of Footwear Fashion

In the years preceding the First World War, the fashion for the "Louis" heel spread, taking up the rococo style developed in France in the 18th century.

After the Second World War, France established itself as a leader in the sector, thanks to Coco Chanel who transformed the concept of femininity and fashion design.

In Italy, Ferragamo created the cork wedge shoe and began "Made in Italy", contributing to the development of Italian fashion.

In the 1960s, footwear became more linear with heels with a wider base and rounded toes. In the 1980s, "Made in Italy" became increasingly established thanks to successful designers such as Gianni Versace, Giorgio Armani and Valentino.
