Sales, my friends, weren't born yesterday.
It all began way back in 1830 in Paris, when a certain Simon Mannoury opened the "Petit Saint-Thomas", which later became the famous "Bon Marché".
Mannoury, a true visionary, understood that at the end of the season he could sell off unsold inventory at reduced prices.
And so sales were born!
Imagine yourself in Paris, with a baguette under your arm, hunting for offers in that temple of shopping!
And the sales in Italy?
But when did sales make their debut in Italy?
Surprisingly, their origin dates back to 1939.
Initially, sales did not have set periods like today and products could be sold at a discount at any time of the year.
After the fall of Fascism, the sales were "forgotten" for a while, only to come back into vogue in the 1980s with very specific rules: four weeks, twice a year.
And it doesn't end there: in 2005 new rules arrived with the Consumer Code, which includes the obligation to display the price before and after the discount.

- Sales vs Promotions: When you see "promotions" in store, don't confuse them with sales! Promotions are markdowns on certain items, usually with lower discount percentages.
- Sales in the World: While in Italy sales are regulated by the government, in the United States every merchant is free to do what he wants when it comes to promotions and price reductions.
