Sports Shoes - The Evolution of Sneakers for Men and Women

The history of sneakers has deep roots that date back to 1860, when the Liverpool Rubber Company, an English company specializing in rubber, began producing shoes with vulcanized soles.

These shoes which were originally designed for outdoor sporting activities such as tennis and cricket changed the landscape of shoes in general when, in 1917, the All-Stars were introduced on the market.

Initially created for basketball, they quickly became a cultural icon thanks to their comfort and versatility.

The 1970s marked a turning point in sneaker fashion. Sports shoes became an integral part of the daily wardrobe, both for young people and adults.

Subsequently, in the 1980s, sneakers gained further popularity thanks to hip-hop culture and its leading artists, such as Run-DMC, who wore the famous Adidas Superstar.

In the 90s the sneaker market exploded with the emergence of new brands that joined the already well-known sports brands. In the new millennium, sneakers became even more influential, becoming a must-have. Today, sneakers come in a wide range of styles, colors and materials, and are enjoyed by people of all ages and backgrounds.

An interesting curiosity about Sneakers

A fascinating curiosity about sneakers is the derivation of the term itself.

"Sneaker" comes from the characteristic of these shoes of being so quiet that they allow the wearer to move discreetly, such as "sneak around" without being noticed.

Keds were the first sneakers to be sold on a large scale, debuting in 1916 as tennis and dance footwear.

Sneakers collection: our case study!

From January to March 2022 we at Sabot also carried out research relating to purchasing behavior in the post-Covid footwear sector. It emerges that the sneakers is the shoe mainly purchased on the web: precisely 70% of respondents chose this option (out of a sample of approximately 500 individuals).

During the pandemic, the sectors most affected were those of classic shoes with a 30% decrease in quantity, while for sneakers the decrease was more limited and around 15%.

For this reason, traditionally elegant brands have had to adapt to the market and create more variants of sneakers, to the detriment of more classic footwear. After sports shoes, some interviewees said they buy pumps, sandals and amphibians.
