The History of Red Wing Shoes

The brand was founded by Charles H. Beckman in 1905.
Red Wing Shoes has deep roots in its namesake town in Minnesota.

Beckman, a visionary shoe salesman, identified the need for sturdy, durable footwear for workers, who until then had been wearing footwear inadequate for the rigors of their daily work.

His insight led to large-scale workwear creations, initially intended for farmers and grain growers in the region, who began wearing the durable, “manure-proof” Black & Brown Chief Shoes.

Then the First World War broke out and Red Wing Shoes adapted to the new needs, producing the " Pershing Boot " for the American army, which is nothing more than a boot that did not let water or humidity in and protected from the cold.

This was just the beginning of a long series of successes, which saw the company expand into various sectors, from the production of boots for the oil industry to riding boots and leisure footwear.

Moments of Crisis: RED WING NEVER GAVE UP!

There was the war, the Great Depression, and dark years afterward, but Red Wing never stopped innovating.

The introduction of rubber soles in the 1920s and the production of affordable footwear allowed the company to overcome periods of crisis, keeping the promise of quality and durability.

The 1950s then ushered in the era of the Irish Setter Sport Boots and the Moc-Toe , which became symbols of the transition from purely work footwear to leisure style icons.

Red Wing and Super Mario: An Iconic Encounter

In a surprising fusion of artisanal tradition and pop culture, Red Wing recently collaborated with the Super Mario Bros. franchise to recreate the mustachioed plumber’s iconic boots.

This collaboration was born to coincide with the release of the Super Mario Bros. animated film and saw Red Wing artisans handcraft a faithful reproduction of Mario's boots, once again demonstrating the versatility that characterizes the brand.

It is a bridge between the world of fashion and that of video games.

Red Wing Shoes Today: A Legacy That Continues

The founding of Red Wing Heritage in 2008 marked a return to the company’s roots, reissuing its most iconic and beloved models, all manufactured in the USA to the same exacting standards as before.

This move has strengthened the brand's position in the world of high-quality workwear and reconfirmed its status as a cultural brand, capable of crossing the decades by adapting and influencing fashion trends.
